7 Years Later:
Ellie opens the door to the bedroom her younger brother shares with his wife, and stops dead in her tracks.
“What are you doing?”
Charles Irving Bartowski looks up from his position sitting by the window, his one-year-old daughter sitting in his lap, and his best friend with one leg out of said window.
“Hey. Hi, Sis,” Chuck grins.
“Ellie!” Morgan cries. “Hi! How ya doin?”
“Chuck. What are you doing?”
“Uh. Escaping.”
“Your own birthday party?” Ellie snaps. “Again?”
“Well, yeah, but this time we’ve got little Willow here, she’s comin’ with us,” Chuck grins, cuddling the toddler. “Isn’t that right, Will?”
Willow squeals happily and waves her chubby arms.
Ellie shakes her heads. “Fine. But I’m not explaining to your wife that you bailed on your own birthday party.”
“Oh my god,” Sarah’s voice says she pokes her head into the window. “What is taking so lo-” She stops and smiles awkwardly. “Ellie. Hi.”
A grunt sounds from behind Sarah, and Ellie realizes that John Casey is there too.
“I give up,” she mutters, and closes the door loudly.
